NAGA CITY – A neophyte congressional aspirant who happens to be the son of the President of the Republic is set to join the three re-electionist legislators from Camarines Sur who are likely to win this year’s mid-term elections, unofficial quick count by the National Movement for Free Election (NAMFREL) shows.
As of 11 a.m. today, Kampi’s Diosdado Ignacio Jose Maria Macapagal-Arroyo, or Dato Arroyo for short, piled up 75,442 votes against Genuine Opposition’s Sabas Mabulo who garnered 45,826 so far in the first congressional district of Camarines Sur, the political turf of Budget Secretary Nonoy Andaya.
Mabulo, a true gentleman and Christian who espouses clean politics, conceded defeat Wednesday even on the basis of unofficial count (see related story in this issue).
In the second congressional district of the province, Rep. Luis R. Villafuerte proves to be a hard nut to crack despite controversies that hounded his campaign. His 74,761 votes from 9 towns and Naga City as of reporting period is over 25,000 votes better than Cho Roco’s 49,507 votes. This is the second match up that Roco was humbled by Villafuerte. Cho, however, had clobbered LRay when the duo squared off in the Naga mayoral contest about nine years ago.
The older Villafuerte may come down in the district’s history as the first local legislator to win a re-election. Former congressmen Raul S. Roco and James Jacob did not seek re-election during their time (Roco climbed up to become senator after his first term and Jacob retired from politics at the end of his first term) while Reps. Celso Baguio and Pol San Buenaventura were not lucky enough to win their bids for second term.
In the third district, challenger Elmo Pilapil (Kampi), outgoing Tigaon mayor, felt uneasy with his 9,018 against veteran Noli Fuentebella’s 29,202 of the Nationalist People’s Coalition. Noli’s son Arne is likewise pulling away in Tigaon’s mayoral race against Elmo’s younger brother Leandro.
In Rinconada’s fourth district, re-electionist Nancing Alfelor is a shoo-in. His 29,181 votes so far dwarf challenger Diones Belza’s 7,098 votes. Belza is an outgoing mayor of Buhi town.
In the lopsided match for governor, re-electionist LRay Villafuerte is unstoppable. He has under his belt 200,373 votes against former Tourism Secretary Eddie Pilapil’s 78,025 votes.
For vice-governor, re-electionist Salvio Fortuno, a former congressman who once defeated Nancing Alfelor has scooped 147,141 votes against Felipe Ortega’s 79,062 votes.
In the match-up for the provincial board, here are the front runners in their respective districts:
District 1: Hernandez (69,176); Nopra (48,594); Genova (37,308).
Distrtct 2: Naval (30,128); Pante (29,886); Verdadero (25,262).
District 3: Pan (17,727); Llaguno (18,570); Cama (9,429).
District 4: Alfelor (22,651); Barayoga (15,909); Oliva (14,880) w/ reports from Ramir Vincent Manaog.
